His first major role was a guest shot on ER in live time 15, later that year followed by guest-starring roles in Judging Amy, Ned's Survival Guide and Summerland. He appeared in local productions of Man of La Mancha and fat. He also had a role in the American Heritage School production of Col. oss aal.Tijdens conducted in Titanic he fell in love with singing and dancing. While still in high school, Pena in TV commercials for the Super Soaker brand recreational water cannon appeared, and his picture on the packaging of the toy appeared.
In 2007 he appeared as a contestant on the MTV series Making Menudo. Pena and his mother converted between South Florida and Hollywood, California, for his television acting roles, and during this time he was tutoring. He returned to Upper School Sage Mont and his high school diploma in 2008. After graduating from high school he went to the Boston Conservatory.
Pena studied music at the Conservatory in Boston when his manager asked him to audition for Big Time Rush. Although he hesitated to do so, he won an audition tape and the role of one month later. Pena moved to Hollywood in August 2009.
